May 3 in Gennett History…

1922: Homer Rodeheaver recorded “Me and Pap and Mother” in Richmond.  It appeared on Gennett 4882 and Rainbow 1010 and featured Rodeheaver (v). 

1923: Ladd’s Black Aces recorded “Long Lost Mama (Daddy Misses You)” in NYC. The track appeared on Gennett 5150 and Starr-Gennett 9409 and featured Phil Napoleon (c), Charlie Panelli (tb), Jimmy Lytell (cl), Frank Signorelli (p), and Jack Roth (d). The picture of the band in the Gennett catalog showed an all African American outfit, even though all of the members were white. 

1928: The McDonald Quartet recorded “Glory Now Is Rising in My Soul” in Richmond. It appeared on Gennett 6705 and Champion 15673 (~2,600 sold) and featured Alvin McDonald (v), Harold McDonald (v), Ralph McDonald (v), and W.E. Smithmire (v).
