June 13 in Gennett History…

1923: Bailey’s Lucky Seven recorded “Pickles” in NYC. It appeared on Gennett 5197 and Starr-Gennett 9418. 

1924: Duke Yellman and his Irene Castle Orchestra recorded “Mandalay” in NYC.  It appeared on Gennett 5482 and Starr-Gennett 9565 and featured Yellman (pn).

1927: The Gold Medal Four recorded “Gypsy Love Song” in St. Paul.  It appeared on Gennett 6224, Champion 15327 (2,933 copies sold), Bell 1156, Challenge 347, and Superior 343.  Champion sent royalties to Cal Schiebe. 

1927: George Osborn and his Orchestra recorded “By the Waters of the Minnetonka” in St. Paul.  It appeared on Gennett 6182, Champion 15306 (~800 copies sold), Black Patti 8038, and Bell 568. 

1927: Les Backer “The Gennett Aristocrat” recorded “Rain” in St. Paul.  It appeared on Gennett 6162, Champion 15288 (~1,500 copies sold), Silvertone 5155, and Superior 316 and featured Backer (v).

1928: The Harrison Quartet recorded “Carry Me Back to Old Virginny” in NYC.  It appeared on Supertone 9143 and Silvertone 8242.

1928: Van and his Orchestra recorded “Among My Souvenirs” in NYC.  It appeared on Gennett 6325, Champion 15401, Silvertone 8038, and Supertone 9001. The track featured Peter Van Steeden (director), Jerry White (v), Red Rehrig (tpt), Lou Lentz (tb), Norman Birseck & Freddy Cusick (as/cl), Art McKay (ts), Dick Costello (pn), Jimmy Smith (g/bjo), Joe Schultz (bs), Sol Misheloff (vn), and Ray Gunnerman (d). Champion sent royalty accountings to Bob Deikman for 2,550 copies. 

1928: Fred Wingate recorded “Sleep, Baby, Sleep” in NYC.  It appeared on Supertone 9121 and Silvertone 8296 and featured Wingate (v).

1929: Paul Miles and the Red Fox Chasers recorded “Virginia Bootleggers” in Richmond. It appeared on Gennett 6930, Champion 15790 & 45079, and Supertone 9492 and featured Guy Brooks (f), Bob Cranford (h), Paul Miles (v & bjo), and A.P. Thompson (g).
