November 16 in Gennett History…

1927: John McGhee recorded “The Preacher and the Bear” in Richmond.  It appeared on Gennett 6403, Champion 15414 (5,769 copies sold) & 33014, Challenge 392, Silvertone 5212 & 8162, Superior 325, and Supertone 9256 and featured McGhee (v, g, & h).

1928: Lawrence Welk and His Novelty Orchestra recorded “Spiked Beer” in Richmond. The recording appeared on Gennett 6712, Gurney 20341, and Champion 15639. The ledger noted “Personal, Lawrence Welk, Yankton, S.D.” The Gurney Seed and Nursery Co. was based in Yankton, S.D.
