December 17th in Gennett History…

1910: Happy 108th Birthday, Sy Oliver! (12/17/1910). Oliver recorded with Zach Whyte’s Chocolate Beau Brummels in Richmond in 1929. “West End Blues” appeared on Gennett 6798, Champion 15714, Champion 33010, Champion 40016, and Supertone 9368. In addition to Oliver, Bubber Whyte, and Henry Savage (c), the track also features Floyd Brady (tb), Earl Tribble, Al Sears, Snake Richardson, and Clarence Page (sax), Herman Chittison (p), Montgomery Morrison (bs), Zach Whyte (bjo), and William Benton (d). 

 

1924: Marion McKay and His Orchestra recorded “Doo Wacka Doo” in Cincinnati. It appeared on Gennett 3045, Gennett 5615, Champion 15011, and Claxtonola 40408. The Champion issue sold 344 copies in 1925 & 1926. 

 

1975: Fess Williams passed away. He recorded “Wimmin – Aaah!” in NYC on 2/19/1926 with his Royal Flush Orchestra. It appeared on Gennett 3259 and Guardsman 1918.
