Aug 14th in Gennett History, 1928: Van and His Hotel Half Moon Orchestra recorded “Pickin’ Cotton” in NYC. It appeared on Ge. 6594, Ch. 15575, Regent R – 1075, and Spt 9060. The Champion issue sold 750 copies in 1928 and 1929. The band featured Roy Strom (v), Red Rehrig & unknown (c), Lou Lentz (tb), Norman Birseck, Freddy Cusick, Art McKay (saxes & cl), Dick Costello (p), Jimmy Smith (p & bjo), Joe Schultz (bass), Sol Misheloff (v), and Ray Gunnerman (d).
